What is the difference between a search engine and a directory?

Search Engines are similar to a library catalogue index. Individual search engines categorise and search websites based on keyword or concept.

This is all done by small but complicated programs called algorithms. Unscrupulous companies will tell you they can easily get your website in the top ten by manipulating the search engine ranking programs. If the search engines find out you are cheating they will ban your website, usually for all time. 

Once you get kicked out of a search engine, it's extremely difficult to get listed again. And other search engines are told too, so you could end up being banned from a large majority of search engines. Honesty is the best policy. A skilled SEO writer knows what to avoid and what to do right.

How does a search engine rank your site?

How do the search engines rank websites? Well this is difficult to answer as the rules change all the time. Page rank counts but is NOT the be-all as the rankings are usually 2-3 months behind. Essentially though the search engine looks at your website, the content, the pictures, everything. It then decides on relevancy and compares it to other similar sites.

Your website is then placed according to those criteria. However, back to the spammy SEO merchant... if your website is written for 'The Most Fantastic Car Rental Company Ever' you will rank 1, however, would you ever type that into Google? No. And neither will anyone else. Are you getting the message?

Web crawlers / spiders

A Web Crawler indexes your entire site and searches keywords for duplication and will normally focus on the first 300 words of page text with less weight given to words further down the page. 

Why do I need to promote my website to the search engines regularly?

New websites come online every day, and they are all looking for top listing in the displayed results. Promotion of your website is key to its success. Many people are disappointed they do not get the traffic they expect.

By placing these key words in strategic places in your text we increase the chances of your web site appearing at or near the top of the search engine results. 

This is why it is important to choose key words that people looking for your product or service are most likely to use in their search.
 
Do key words work in directories too? 

Yes. Most directories have a built in search engine. However, it is possible to find companies listed under a specific topic; for example, you can click on the links to Internet/Website/Website designers Cyprus to arrive at a page listing Website Designers in Cyprus.
 
Will people find my web site if it is not in the first 10, 20 or 30 results?

Obviously, the best place to be listed in the search engine results is in the top 10 places. That is where the most relevant listings for your keyword search should be. Some people will continue to drill down to lower results pages if they don't find what they are looking for in the first page or so.

The answer is 'YES' but it depends on how much time the searcher has to search. The question is:- Will they?????
